Trend Alert! Tartan Army

Fashion has proven to be cyclical, with some trends resurfacing every so often in one way or another. Tartan has made a big statement returning every decade and this autumn it is back once more with a vengeance.

This time around it’s all about the colours of the tartan, though more traditional pallets are still on trend. Bright electric pinks, greens and yellows are what inspired top designer Alexander Wang to call this autumns trend “tartan with a twist”. This trend was seen on a multitude of runways for the A/W 2011 season, interpreted in different ways befitting of the fashion house that was showing it. Burberry had some classic sleek tartan coats, at Mochino Cheap & Chic a tartan bubble skirt stood out and Sonia Rykiel showed some wide legged tartan trousers. If you love the tartan look then double tartan is the way to go, it is huge this autumn, if you feel brave enough take a leaf out of designer Tory Burch’s book and wear a full on tartan suit.

Here are some of our favourite Tartan pieces from this season’s High Street collections.

House of Fraser: Therapy: Tartan check mini skirt, Multi-Coloured

Tartan Check Mini Skirt- Multi-coloured- Therapy- House of Fraser

This Therapy: Tartan Check Mini Skirt available at House of Fraser draws the mind to style queen bee Blaire Waldorf in Gossip Girl and her tartan school uniforms with a fashionable twist. This skirt is in a dark multi-coloured tartan making the appearance more discreet than brightly coloured prints. For a spin on the Gossip Girl look match this skirt with an alice band, choose a tartan one if you want to go for an understated take on the double tartan trend. Because of the dark soft colours of this skirt you can get away with a brighter top, but stay away from the fine prints.

MotelRocks.com: Motel Laurel Tartan Chiffon Shirt

To get two trends with one purchase get this Motel Laurel Tartan Chiffon Shirt. This shirt incorporates the sheer fabric trend as well as the tartan one. It is in a royal blue colour with pops of green and red. Tartan is very denim friendly so why not wear this shirt with a pair of high waisted denim shorts. For a casual preppy look step in to some flat brogues or tasseled loafers. This blue tone goes great with other bright colurs so choose a bag that will stand out, maybe an orange, green or pink one.
