Top 5 Capes

As the colder nights are drawing in, it’s time to find that perfect cover-up to see you through to the spring. There’s nothing hotter this season than a cape. Perfect for all shapes and sizes, and easy to layer up underneath to keep you warm for the even colder months ahead. The cape is the stylish outer layer to be seen in. Try experimenting with different patterns and fabrics, and weave in other trends with tartan, fur and camel colours.

The cape is a comfortable piece that is still set to be huge for Spring 2011, so I would recommend investing in something you love. There are plenty available on the high street, so you should be able to find something to suit your style.

Here are my top 5 capes:

Taupe Tweed Piped Cape at Dorothy Perkins

The first in my list is this stunning wool mix cape from Dorothy Perkins. It has a tweed-look finish, with button pipe detailing down the front. This cape is stunning and would look fantastic worn with a contrasting fabric, such as black leather. Wear a black leather skirt, some coloured or patterned tights and black riding boots.

This cape is usually priced at £65, but Dorothy Perkins are currently offering 20% off all full priced coats until Friday 1st October, bringing the price down to £52 if you’re quick!

Cream Faux Fur Cape at Miss Selfridge

Faux fur is a huge trend this season and can be found in all forms of clothing and accessories. When I first saw this cape, I thought it tied into the trend amazingly.

This cream faux fur cape at Miss Selfridge is stunning. It has a darker tan shade collar and really takes on a vintage feel. I could imagine wearing this in the spring with flared jeans, halter tops and tassels to take on the 70′s S/S ’11 trend, as seen at Topshop Unique. For now, wear it with a floral dress and knitted tights. Update the colours to match the seasons; from the darker autumnal shades of military green and navy, to bright disco blues and oranges when the flowers start to bloom.

Sophia Cape Coat at Coast

You can’t go wrong with black. It is always a good, safe option. So jazz up an otherwise plain black coat by choosing this gorgeous cape at Coast. It has waterfall effect sleeves, and a belted waist. It would be the perfect cover-up for any day or night outfit.

Try wearing it over a tailored shift dress, or skinny trousers with stilettos. Anything to give your legs a long, lean look, which will make the most of the belted waist to show off your curves. It’s simple and sassy. It’s a little pricey at £220, but will last a lifetime.

Camel Cape at Karen Millen

This cape at Karen Millen is fabulous. It comes in this autumn’s key colour, and has already sold out once! It has just come back into stock on Karen Millen’s website, so snap it up quickly!
This gorgeous wool cape has buttoned detailing on the front, and has a lovely feature of having button loops at the end of the sleeves that you can attach to one of the front buttons giving it a wrap-around finish. This adds to the overall view of this jacket by allowing you the two separate looks. Wear it with riding boots and skinny jeans to set off the British Heritage trend.

Red Checked Faux Fur Hood Cape at Miss Selfridge

My last choice of cape is this beautiful red checked cape at Miss Selfridge. Again it incorporates a lot of this season’s key trends with the tartan and faux fur trim collar, and is very reasonably priced at £65. It has cute duffle-like toggles and would look great over that little black dress for a night out on the town. Wear with matching red shoes, and harder edge accessories. Try a studded bag and Gothic jewellery. Some funky printed tights will look great too! Anything to make it look more Taylor Momsen and less like Little Red Riding Hood!
