Clear skin is every girl’s dream but unfortunately for many of us our skin seems to be an area of concern. One of the most common problems is acne. Whilst there can be many underlying causes of acne, many cases can be improved or cleared up just by following some simple tips. Try out our top tips for clear skin to help you achieve that clear, smooth and most of all healthy skin that you desire.
Cleanse your skin: It may seem the most obvious solution but it is where many go wrong. Many cases of acne are caused by bacteria so it is important to keep your face clean. Firstly you must select the right type of cleanser for your skin. Not all cases of acne are found on greasy, oily skin it is not always necessary to use a “spot treatment” cleanser. You should find your skin type using our What Is Your Skin Type guide and choose your products according to your skin type for the best results.
It is very tempting to grab the first product that tells you it will clear your skin; this may not be suitable as many of these contain harsh ingredients that will simply strip skin of their oils. Never cleanse your face with soap; again this will strip your skin. Stripping your skin will only lead to more spot misery, as your skin will fight and produce more sebum, in turn you will develop more spots. The second important fact to remember is not to have to have the temperature of the water too hot. Water that is too hot will cause the skin to “panic” and again, it will produce more oil. Hand hot water is fine. Thirdly, always make sure that you remove the cleansing product thoroughly, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Don’t Touch!: Touching your skin will transfer bacteria from your hands to your face so try and avoid touching your face throughout the day. Also try to wear your hair away from your face, as the hair also transfers spot-causing bacteria and oils. One of the main culprits of forehead outbreaks is a fringe, so if you do have a fringe, keep it clean and avoid using too many hair products on it. DO NOT pick your spots, you will cause bacteria to re-enter the skin making the spot worse and also you may cause scarring! Keep your make-up brushes and sponges clean, if you do suffer from acne, you should wash them at least every 2 weeks something that most of us fail to do – I find that baby shampoo is fantastic, especially if your brush is made from natural hair.
Be Healthy: Eating a balanced diet, containing lots of fruit and veg will provide your body the vitamins and nutrients it needs to keep your skin healthy. Ensure that you drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep those nasty toxins away too. Often your skin is an advert for how your body is feeling inside so look after yourself and wear your skin with pride!
If you do suffer with outbreaks of acne on a regular or constant basis, following the above tips will certainly help but you should seek medical advice as there may be an underlying cause, many of which are easy to detect and treat!
