The 50’s are back! Think post war (post recession) glamour. This trend is all about shape and style. Florals are still here but look for faded prints and complement neutral shades with darker autumnal colours. Skirts are full circle, and waists are high. Tailoring is feminine but with strong lines, a la Chanel! Anything girly and romantic that gives off a perfect hour-glass silhouette is right on track! Team all of this with sophisticated accessories such as pearls, lace gloves and vintage brooches and you’ll have the look in the bag!
My top 5 must have pieces for the 50′s fashion trend this autumn/winter 2010 would be:
The dress: Love Label Button Front Bandeau Dress
This dress by Love Label at Additionsdirect.co.uk sums up the look exactly. I love the colour scheme in the large splash print, the high waist and sweetheart neckline. The shape gives definition to your waist, and the full circle skirt definitely gives off the 50’s vibe. It also has a British Military addition with the button detailing, helping it achieve 2 of this seasons key trends! Add some antique looking jewellery with material covered beads and a trinket necklace to finish the look. At £35 it’s a bargain and should be snapped up
The Jacket: DKNY Summer Tweed Jacket at my-wardrobe.com
Now if you want to pay homage to Chanel, but can’t afford the price tag, this is a (slightly) cheaper version of a great jacket. Made to give off a tweed look which weaves in the ‘British Heritage’ trend, this jacket is a strong, sharp cut, but is oozing femininity. DKNY have produced a beautiful jacket that will work dressed down with jeans, or up with a 50’s prom, shift or corset dress. Stick to plain, bold colours under this as the tweed is enough. Add pearls to complete your sophisticated look!
The Shoes: Debut Teal Almond Toe Court Shoes at Debenhams
Now with all the feminine clothing around this season, the shoe should reflect this too. Almond toes, which have an oval shape with a point at the front, were big in the 50’s and can be found all over the high street.
Debut at Debenhams are a great value range, and have come up with some beautiful designs. Their almond toe court shoes are made from satin and come in black and teal. The bow detail at the front gives the shoes a little extra glamour, and would finish off a 50’s inspired prom look. At £20, you’d be foolish to miss out!
The Bag: Painted Floral Clutch at Topshop.com
A 50’s bag should be lady-like, very neat but without taking away from the rest of your outfit. A small, beautifully designed clutch would be ideal. I came across a lot of floral printed bags, but this one at Topshop really caught my eye. It has a magnetic fastening, the floral detailing is painted, and the darker colours work perfectly for autumn. It’s so feminine and delicate, and should be dressed alongside an elegant dress or 50’s separates.
The Accessory: Marc by Marc Jacobs Mademoiselle Danger Scarf at Selfridges.com
I think we all remember the scene from Grease where Cha-Cha DiGregorio starts the race using her yellow scarf. It’s an iconic, statement piece of the 50’s. The one that caught my eye may be a little pricy at £175, but how could you not fall in love with it?! It screams big screen sex symbol! Bring out your inner Marilyn and dress yourself up in this beautiful cashmere and silk blend scarf from Marc by Marc Jacobs. It’s exquisite!
Now where are those ‘T’ Birds?…
