The office Christmas party; an afternoon, evening or maybe even a whole day off work in order to celebrate this festive time of year and enjoy the company of your colleagues and – of course – your boss, outside of the office. Whether you’re out for a nice meal, a mulled wine or two, or a full on party, this annual event often leaves us girls in a bit of a predicament – what on earth do we wear? Well don’t fret, just follow the tips outlined below and take a look at our idea board for some inspiration. You’ll be enjoying your work Christmas party without worrying about the appropriateness of your outfit… just remember not to get too carried away with any office gossip or blabbing about your secret crush on the guy in finance once the cocktails are flowing!

Here are our top four tips for choosing a successful and appropriate office party outfit:

Tip 1. The office Christmas party is not a casual social affair with friends, it’s a work function so leave your mini skirts and midriff exposing boob tubes at home.

Tip 2. Your boss, and potentially even your boss’s boss, will be there – so dress to impress. If you wear business dress to work then continue this style into your party outfit.

Tip 3. Unless you work as a bar tender in a night club, a dolphin trainer at Seaworld or some other profession in which you end up showing a lot of skin by default then above all, do not forget the golden rule when it comes to dressing for any type of work occasion – do not show too much skin.

Tip 4. Don’t be afraid to add some appropriate seasonal touches, it is Christmas time after all. Just keep these touches sophisticated and professional such as tasteful sequined embellishment, a hint of holiday red, or perhaps a festive scarf – steer clear of the reindeer ears and musical jumpers, ladies.

We’ve compiled our idea board based on these 4 tips. Starting with the Warehouse: Woven Lace and Sequin T-shirt, this top offers up some gorgeous gold sequin embellishment perfect for the Christmas office party with a high neckline and capped sleeves to cover the shoulders. The loose fit prevents the lace and sequin t-shirt from looking tacky and instead keeps the top stylish, glamorous and sophisticated all at the same time. At £45.00 it is quite pricey, and it’s also very sheer so a nude cami underneath would be essential. We love this woven lace and sequin T-shirt from Warehouse all the same though and it sits at the perfect length when paired with the Dorothy Perkins: Black Pocket Midi Skirt. This pocket midi skirt is a reasonable £28.00 and immediately prevents any stressing over whether or not your skirt/dress is too short, concerns of it riding up when you walk or being uncomfortable to sit down in. Yes, the black midi skirt from Dorothy Perkins will allow you to walk, mingle, dance and sit in comfort and keep you safe in the knowledge that you’re not going to accidentally flash any one at the dinner table (unless the copious amounts of mulled wine lead you to do this on purpose – although we’re sure you would never be responsible for any such behavior…). Falling just below the knee, the Dorothy Perkins black pocket midi skirt drapes beautifully from the pockets down.
Bring some more high fashion style to the ensemble with the Topshop: Shower Peep Toe Heels in black. The gold detailing on the back of these otherwise classic black suede peep toes makes a real statement without being risque or inappropriate. At £80.00 these are a pair of stylish heels you can wear with so many different outfits – a good investment we’re sure you’ll agree.
Add a touch of festive red to this outfit in the form of the Oasis: Croc Toaster Bag – a bargain at just £15.00 – this fiery red mini cross body bag brings some more textures to the outfit.
Finish things off with a dash of matching red to your nails with Jessica Nails Colour 656 Nail Varnish in shock me red from Gorgeous Shop. The nail varnish will set you back £8.78 but this polish can stay pretty on your nails for a whole two weeks, that’s one less thing to have to think about for the New Year’s party!

So just remember; you’re out of the office but it’s still a work function, dress to impress as you would normally, don’t show too much skin and bring a subtle touch of Christmas cheer to your outfit. But most importantly, you’ve worked hard all year, so don’t forget to enjoy yourself!
