The fifties was a decade of change not only involving fashion and clothing but also socially and politically. The end of the war meant a new found freedom for this generation of people and those new found liberties continue to provide worthwhile inspiration today especially when it comes to vintage inspired clothing. There was no one person more responsible for the iconic shapes of the 1950s than Christian Dior and his “New Look”. This look became known all over the world and is beginning its revival again in today’s pop culture. Going are the days of dressed down casual clothing, hair and make-up and we say hello to a more elegant emergence of ultra feminine style and proportion and a much needed nod towards a long forgotten lady like charm.
1950s trends are big within the wedding scene this year so either of these dresses would make for suitable attire if you have a wedding to attend or if you have another formal occasion to be present at; they would work just as well. This trend has been on the increase over the past 6 months notably due to the resurgence of 50s vibe within the music scene, thanks to bands and singers like The Baseballs, The Overtones, Imelda May and Paloma Faith.
We’ve got two fabulously chic X-line dresses to decide between this week that scream 1950s glamour.
Spend – Coast: Maddison Dress

First up is by Coast, one of my much-loved stores for occasion dresses. They never fail to impress with their beautiful creations and this £150.00 Maddison dress is no exception.
The distinctive x-line silhouette is synonymous with the 1950s hourglass shape; nipped in at the waist with a satin belt that matches the trim on the bodice, this on- the-knee dress will give you that classic look. In a vibrant coral colour the dreamy full skirt creates fullness and accentuates the beautiful outline. [However if this skirt is not exaggerated enough for you, layer it up with net under skirts to add more volume]. The slight sweetheart neckline alludes a cleavage courtesy of a built in bra support that is doubly scalloped and cheekily pokes out of the halter neck bodice. Ruched detailing adds a different element of texture and finishes this dress.
Available in two colour options coral and ivory. [Ivory only available from Coast]

Save – Goddiva.co.uk: Hitched Skirt Party Dress in the style of Dita Von Teese

Our alternative choice is this Hitched Skirt Party Dress in the style of Dita Von Teese from Goddiva.co.uk. Shorter than the Coast dress this pretty little number is very feminine with its layers of skirt that drape in a gloriously voluminous manner. In contrast to the soft shape of the skirt, the bodice is structured and corset like. The matching belt adds that little bit extra definition to the waist and gives the dress an added character. The colour choice oozes aristocratic quality and looks even more resplendent with the silver sequin and embroidery design that accompanies it. Fortunately the price tag on this frock won’t break the bank; it is an affordable £42.00 which means more pennies to spend on the best bit; the shoes and bag!!

Which 1950s inspired prom dress do you think is the best value this week??
