There are five main skin types, these are normal, combination, oily, dry and sensitive, it is essential that you identify your skin type to ensure you are using the best products for your skin, this will improve general skin condition and work towards preventing any further problems especially later in life.
A simple way of finding out your skin type is using a clean facial tissue in the morning, wipe your face then examine it.
If the tissue has no traces of oil your skin is normal, if the tissue has no traces of oil but your skin feels dry, tight and flaky you have dry skin
If the tissue has traces of oil on after wiping the t-zone but dry around the cheek areas you have combination skin, if the cheek areas leave traces of oil on the tissue you have oily skin.
Normal skin, this is of course the ideal skin type everyone wants. An even smooth texture, pores are small and breakouts are very rare. Normal skin is low maintenance and a simple skin care routine is sufficient.
Oily skin, tke skin type everyone would like to avoid. Natural skin oils are needed to prevent dry skin and keep the skin looking youthful and healthy however overproduction leading to excess oils can cause greasy problematic skin. Oily skin can be identified by a shiny appearance, large pores and frequent breakouts. Oily skin tends to have a film of grease that develops quickly after cleansing and therefore a quicker build up of dirt and blocked pores occurs increasing the chances of breakouts therefore it is more important for oily skin to be using the correct skincare products and engage in a regular cleansing routine.
Combination skin, the most common skin type is normal skin with oily areas, these tend to be the t-zone (forehead, nose and chin). The t-zone areas will be prone to breakouts and a cleansing routine needs to be concentrated in this area with specialist combination skin care products.
Dry skin is easily noticeable due to the flaky patches of potentially red skin. The skin will feel tight after cleansing, it is essential you use the correct skincare products to prevent your skin drying out further. Dry skin is susceptible to wrinkles and itchiness but can easily be treated with a tailored gentle skincare routine. It is especially important not to use skincare products created for oily skin as this will just dry out the skin further.
Sensitive skin tends to be thin and easily irritated therefore prone to problems such as redness, inflammation and breakouts. Skin can be sensitive due to the skin not producing enough natural oils to protect the skin. Due to the fragility of the skin you it is highly important you look after your skin with specialist gentle products. Many people find perfume free organic products work best compared to chemical products which just cause further irritation. You will know you have sensitive skin due to the tightness, frequent redness and reaction to your skin to normal skincare products.
